Corporate Leased Line connection
Corporate Leased Line connection
To connect your computer to the Internet permanently, besides a modem and router, you need also a leased line. From the user’s point of view the main things that matter are speed of the connection, installation cost, and recurring monthly charges. There is a great number of variations depending on your location and wishes (if you are interested, please, complete the Order Form).
Usually the user’s LAN, not a single computer is connected by a leased line. The main options are described below.
- Digital line provided by Moldtelekom. This is the most advanced solution widely used in developed countries and for international communications. This means that Moldtelecom installs all equipment between points A and B, including modems. Digital lines are always synchronous and typically have speed 64Kbps, 128Kbps, 2Mbps, etc. When ordering the digital line, you just specify the speed of the line and the type of interface at both ends (usually V.35.). Advantage of this solution is that Moldtelecom takes full responsibility for the line, modems, etc. However, this is the most expensive solution. Available in Chisinau, Beltsi and few other districts of the country.
- 2 or 4 physical twisted copper wires. This is one of the cheapest and most efficient solutions, but it works only at limited distance. Most modems work at distances up to 5.5 km. There are special modems that work at distances up to 20 km. Most leased line modems work on this type of lines, but the most efficient are so called baseband modems that provide data transfer speeds in the range 64Kbps up to 2Mbps.
- 2 or 4 wire analog line. This type of line has no distance limitation due to ordinary telephone quality signal amplifiers installed along the line. But such lines are limited to telephone quality analog signal (300-3000Hz) and therefore can be used only with modems originally designed for dial-up connections with the speed up to 28.8Kbps. 2 wire line acts as ordinary phone line, while in 4 wire line transmitting and receiving signals are separated (a modem supporting 4 wire line is required in this case). You can specify 2 wire or 4 wire option when ordering the line. 4 wire option usually provides better quality. This is the only type of leased lines available for many peripheral towns.
- Optical Fiber. Although currently Moldtelekom does not offer this type of lines, under special circumstances they may be available. There are two types of fiber: monomode and multimode fiber. Monomode is more expensive, with standard equipment it works at distance up to 30-50km without repeaters (this type of fiber is used by Moldtelecom itself.) Multimode is cheaper, but usually limited to a few kilometers. Due to very high data rates available (100Mbps and higher), typically fiber lines are used with high-speed protocols and equipment: FDDI, ATM, 10BaseFL (Ethernet), etc.
- Wireless links. There are numerous wireless technologies available and many new ones emerging. The classical solutions are microwave poit-to-point links (radio relay lines) and satellite links. New technologies are poit-to-multipoint Wireless Local Loop, Wireless ATM, etc. RENAM offers wireless spread-spectrum point-to-multipoint packet radio solution.
- Whichever leased line option you choose, RENAM will assist you to select the right modem and operating mode (synchronous or asynchronous). RENAM can help you also to select the right router and networking software, to configure your LAN if necessary. In some cases it is possible even to get around without a dedicated router — your network server or an old PC is able to manage this job. Finally, RENAM can consult you about Internet security, help in firewall design, user training and starting the Internet services like your own WWW server.
