RENAM expands access to eduroam at Comrat State University

RENAM continues to extend the eduroam service across the Republic of Moldova. Comrat State University (KDU) fully benefits from eduroam, thanks to RENAM, the National Research and Education Network of Moldova. Internet access in the premises of this university is now easily available and secure in the study areas and at the student dormitory.

There were installed and configured 19 access points in the university building and 21 in the dormitory. RENAM specialists designed this network to achieve good coverage of eduroam and made the installation works to obtain a functional eduroam network, including the laying works and setting up the equipment parameters.

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide Wi-Fi roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop, mobile phone or other device.

The dynamics of access to the eduroam service by KDU users (at other institutions in the Republic of Moldova or abroad) are notably positive, the number of successful authentications has grown significantly from 4696 in 2021, to 16676 in 2023 and further to 56307 in 2024.

As KDU participates in Erasmus+ projects, the university staff visit other countries – partners of the projects. Over the last five years, the number of students engaging in mobility programmes (especially in universities in Turkey, European Union, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and other countries) has risen. Both lecturers and students appreciate the convenience of using the eduroam service abroad, particularly during extended stays.

“The advantages of the eduroam service became clear when we connected to RENAM. In November 2021, I travelled with colleagues to Sivas Cumhuriyet University (Turkey) as part of the Erasmus+ mobility programme. We were pleased to find that we had internet access through eduroam in the university buildings and dormitory.
KDU uses the Moodle platform in the educational process, which requires internet access. All our students can connect to the secure Wi-Fi from their devices, with each provided an individual login and password for eduroam. We inform students about the available opportunities, registering them so they can access the internet for free, connect to our educational platform, participate in mobile surveys and complete assignments from their gadgets.
Previously, we had several eduroam access points, but the coverage was limited. Now, there are no connectivity issues, as coverage is available in all buildings and on every floor. Students and staff living in the university dormitory also have the opportunity to use eduroam.
We are satisfied with our collaboration with RENAM. Whenever we have any questions, our employee contacts a RENAM representative and we receive prompt feedback.”

eduroam users from Moldova can also freely access the internet abroad – with more than 10,000 eduroam hotspots across more than 100 countries – whether they are participating in the Erasmus+ international exchange programme, a scientific conference or a collaboration.

Joining new institutions to the eduroam network contributes to their transformation into more convenient places, so that eduroam users benefit from uninterrupted service, accessing the content they need, increasing their mobility and improving their digital access.

The expansion of the necessary infrastructure is supported by the EU-funded project ‘EU4Digital: Connecting Research and Education Communities (EaPConnect)’, and RENAM offers such services to research and education institutions.
