On October 27, 2023, the round table entitled “Academician Andrei Andriesh at 90: the Destiny of Scholar and Defender of the Academic Citadel” was held, summoned by the Exact and Engineering Sciences Section of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) and the Institute of Applied Physics of the Moldova State University. The event was a welcome and deserved tribute to the prominent physicist, Academician Andrei Andriesh – the third President of the ASM (1989-2004) during an extremely difficult and turbulent period of transition.
The speakers mentioned the achievements of Academician Andrei Andriesh as a scholar and organizer of science in Moldova, including important efforts in developing information technologies in the national research and education sector.
In the late 1990s, the advantages of using new information and communication technologies were recognised. In this context, Dr. Grigore Secrieru noted the decisive role in this field of Academician Andrei Andriesh and Academician Ion Bostan, rector of the Technical University of Moldova (TUM), who were the promoters of the founding in 1999 of RENAM, the national research and education network in Moldova, managed by the RENAM Association.
As the speaker pointed out, for more than 20 years, the foundation of the academic information environment in the field of science and education constitutes the RENAM infrastructure – part of the national and global Internet infrastructure, created and developed with the support of international grants (NATO, EU, etc.). The RENAM network connected ASM, TUM, other universities, and institutions from the academic, cultural, and medical domains. Academician Andrei Andriesh, as the General Director, has made considerable efforts to establish RENAM as an electronic information infrastructure developed in our country to provide specific services needed to the educational, scientific, and innovation community.
